The Scent of Departure

May 19, 2011

“For many travelers, sharing the memory of their trip is as pleasurable as the experience itself. However, while photos, food, music and art can give a flavour of foreign climes, capturing the smell of a city has remained somewhat more problematic. Enter Scent of Departure, a new perfume sold in airport duty-free shops that aims to capture a city’s fragrance in a bottle.

The 50ml bottles carry the three letter code of the airport they are purchased in, and the fragrance inside is designed to evoke that city’s atmosphere. For example, in the company’s own words, the Vienna perfume is reminiscent of “A walk from the peaceful Danube – banks full of enchanting scents of fresh mint, cut grass and water flowers – to an outdoor breakfast in the Palace garden of Belveder. Enjoy the garden’s baroque atmosphere and the gourmand scents of Wien’s pastries, delicious with their gourmand notes of vanilla, liquorice, chocolate and coffee.” Created by Parisian Gerald Ghislain and Magali Senequier, the scents currently listed online represent Munich, Vienna, Istanbul, Budapest and Frankfurt. The bottles carry a suggested retail price of EUR 29, and are due for full global release in late 2011.”

BURGER KING® FLAME™ – Body spray of seduction, with a hint of flame-broiled meat

December 17, 2008

Flame by Burger King

No jokes! American men (and women?) can for a mere $US3.99 get it on, that is get the scent of flame grilled burger on.

According to their official website (http://www.firemeetsdesire.com) “The Whopper sandwich is America’s favourite burger, Flame by BK captures the essence of that love and gives it to you. Behold … now you can set the mood for whatever you’re in the mood for.”

Certainly an unusual campaign by the King but tapping right into that sense of desire which no sense does better than our sense of smell.

Not too sure what the reaction from vegeterians and vegans will be?

Notebook on “Scents of Self”

February 7, 2008

We can garner valuable insight into the potency of environmental scenting by looking at the human historical love in wearing perfume.

“…Without their perfume lines, many of the great fashion houses of the world would struggle to exist. According to industry sources, brands such as Chanel, Armani, Versace and Gucci, just to name a few, may derive anywhere from 40 to 50 per cent of their incomes from perfume. What drives those sales is that perfume not only smells good, but the glittering flacons also offer a way for the customer to buy into the brand. “Perfumes deliver dreams,” says British fragrance expert and author Susan Irvine. “They allow the wearer to project themselves into a new reality; one where they’re richer, more attractive, more popular than in their own lives. If you can’t afford a Chanel suit you can still wear Chanel No.5 and get the feeling you’re part of that elite club…”
